February 2023 EDITION
ARE YOU READY TO JOIN YORK RITE? PLEASE INQUIRE!
ANGOLA YORK RITE DEGREE WORK
On February 25 and March 4, 2023, Angola York Rite will be part of a York Rite Festival with Ohio and Michigan. All 9 degrees and orders will be conferred on two consecutive Saturdays. More specifics mentioned later in this newsletter.
The festival will allow Master Masons to join York Rite. The initiation fee is $125 which includes your 2023 dues. As you have traveled through three degrees in your Blue Lodge, it continually mentions the need to search for more light in Masonry. York Rite provides this opportunity.
The degrees and orders are a continuation of the Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft and Master Mason degrees. As you try to make sense of the meanings of the first 3 degrees, York Rite will help you understand better the travels you have made. Give a York Rite member a call or discuss it with one you know to be a well-traveled Mason.

ANGOLA MASONIC LODGE HISTORY LESSON
SO WHY DO I SHOW YOU THIS 1950’S PICTURE?
It is the site of the southwest corner of the mound – south of Angola State Bank. It is now an antique store – in the 1970’s it was Strocks Clothing Store for men. In this 1950’s picture it was a dress shop.
What do you notice? The 1950’s Mercury? The Angola downtown street sale? The cable over the street that ran from the State Bank south to the second story of the adjoining building so a sign could be hung (in this picture the sign is pushed to the south).
YOU SEE ANYTHING MASONIC? Look at the third floor of the building! See the Square and Compass? When
this building had a fire in the 1950’s the third floor of the building was removed. Also the square and compass stone was removed and found a new home.
This building at one time was owned by the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Masonic Lodge rented the third floor for their meetings, until the current Lodge building was completed in 1924. The move was made!
When you enter the current Lodge building, you will find this stone on the first landing as you go up to the Lodge. Aren’t we glad the Masons of old had this Masonic emblem preserved!!
SEARCH FOR PAST MASTER FAMILIES CONTINUES!!
There are now only 22 pictures to be found. A total of 100 are now in place. We have had 122 different Past Masters since the Lodge was chartered in 1858.
Finding these Past Masters is a great challenge. I have discovered through genealogy sources that our first Worshipful Master Jesse Squier, who helped charted Angola Lodge #236 in 1858, is in my family lineage. I did not know that until now. If I go back to my gggrandfather, there were several brothers, one of the sons is my direct ancestor of my grandmother Dairy Squier and another son was the ancestor of Jesse Squire. WHAT A STORY!
Need your help to find some pictures of our remaining Past Masters! I have no clue on where to find some of the early Masters. For example, Jesse Squire in 1858; Simeon Latson in 1874; Otto Schultz in 1884; Fred Snyder in 1897; Clyde Ritter in 1909; Earl Dole in1921; Kenneth Rathbun in 1927; Wayland Seely in 1937. WHO OUT THERE WORKS WITH ANCESTRY.COM ON YOUR COMPUTER? I have not used it yet but understand it can give a person some leads. WHO CAN HELP TO FIND ANY TYPE OF CLUE? HELP SEARCH AND SEE WHAT YOU CAN FIND!
A more recent Past Master is – CARL SUNDAY IN 1969.
Carl’s wife Barb was involved with the Angola Mayors Office and was head of the Elliot Manor Housing on Williams Street. WHO KNEW HIM?
TEXT PAUL FRIEND OR CALL AT 260-402-6122 with possible leads. Thanks!
