Tuesday, November 1
The next stated meeting of Angola Lodge #236 will be on Tuesday, November 1, at the Angola Masonic Lodge. The special guest will be the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Indiana. Grand Master Lentz will be presenting 50 year memberships to two Angola members.
A meal will be ready at 6:00 PM, followed by the stated meeting at 7:00 PM. Local members are invited to attend to greet the Grand Master and congratulate the two members who will be receiving their award of gold.
FEAST OF ST. JOHN PLANNING UNDERWAY
A communication has gone out to northeastern Indiana Lodges (to the Worshipful Masters and Secretary’s) about planning a combined Feast of St. John, which is scheduled for Tuesday, December 27. This message was sent by Bob Tracey, who is the Grand Marshall for the Grand Lodge of Indiana.
The message is for the Lodges in the four northeast counties to be considering a combined Feast. They are looking for a potential Lodge to host the event – to date Concord and Angola have indicated an interest in hosting. Lodges are to discuss at their next stated meeting to determine if they want to participate. Feedback is requested so as to plan this annual Masonic event. Some kind of a head count for meals will be requested.
TIME FOR ELECTION OF OFFICERS IN LOCAL LODGES
November 1 will be the date for election of the 2023 Lodge Officers for Angola Lodge #236 (most other Lodges have their elections in December). If any member is interested in starting in the officer line or want to continue to move up the line, please let it be known to the current officers.
LODGE OF INSTRUCTION FOR ANGOLA #236 AND NORTHEASTERN #210
The Lodge of Instruction is an educational meeting for the officers of the Lodges. An assigned person will observe the work done by the officers in opening and closing the Lodge along with the usual cast of the Lodges presenting one of the degrees. The instructor will evaluate the ritual words give and the tactics performed. The purpose is for Lodges to present work that is prescribed by the Grand Lodge.
Officers and active cast members are especially invited to attend.
This event will be held on Monday, November 7, at Northeastern Lodge#210, starting at 7:00 PM.
ANGOLA LODGE #236 RAISES BRYCE TURNER
Bryce Turner (pictured in center, front row) was raised to the degree of Master Mason on October 11 at Angola Lodge. Congratulations to Bryce.
ANGOLA LODGE #236 BUILDING NEARING 100 YEARS OLD
Construction for the current Angola Masonic Lodge building began on April 1, 1923, the cornerstone laid on August 21, 1923, and the building dedicated on St. Johns Day on June 24, 1924. At the time of the dedication, Angola Lodge had a membership of 616.
To celebrate the buildings 100 years of existence, a special coin is being struck to help commemorate the 100 year building. You will be hearing about the upcoming celebration and coin in the near future.
NORTHEASTERN LODGE #210 (Fremont)
Northeastern Lodge #210, continues its’ Monday morning coffee and donuts at the Fremont Lodge. They will continue to meet throughout the year. Meet around 8:00 AM for fellowship and leave when necessary (usually close to 9:00 AM). The lodge is located a half block east of the 4 way stop, on the north side of State Road 120.
PICTURES OF ANGOLA PAST MASTERS
What a project! Over the years since Angola Lodge was chartered in 1858, there have been 120 different Worshipful Masters. Pictures have been collected of 71 Past Masters and are now placed on the new framing on the south side of the dining room. Come to a Lodge meeting and observe.
That leaves 49 Past Masters pictures to be found. About 15 of these desired pictures are in progress to be secured…BUT…there are many yet to be found. If you are into the Ancestry searching mechanism on your computer, your help is desired to search out family members.
Let me give you some names and the year they were Worshipful Master – please help locate any of their descendants:
1931 – Herman Kohl (operated Angola Lumber); 1937 – Wayland Seely (operated Angola Coal); 1950 – Arthur Bishop (had a daughter Phyllis); 1952 – John (Jack) Johnson (real estate);
1960 – Gerald Miller (daughter Vicki Osborn).
Please help me find these Past Master families so we can get their picture. TEXT PAUL FRIEND OR CALL AT 260-402-6122. Thanks!
Worthy to note is that in the 1889 Lodge minutes, it said that pictures of all Past Masters (our earliest Past Masters) should be obtained from the wall of the old Lodge room and relocate to the new Lodge building (this was back in the early days of the Lodge when there were two or three different moves for meeting places).
So are the early Past Master pictures located somewhere in the archives of Angola Lodge? Searching will continue!
Below is a picture showing a portion of the collected pictures. Thanks to those who have helped locate families. More to search and find!
